Kagera police tighten screws on taxi bikes

Motorcycles are a common mode of public transport in many parts of Kagera Region but the regional police commander Abdallah Mssika, thinks that in order to ensure people`s safety, the bikes will only be used for private transport and not taxi services.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Mssika told this newspaper that his force cannot allow taxi services on motorcycles because it is against the law.

``Motorcycles have been used for a long time in Kagera as taxis. Frankly speaking that is wrong. Motorcycles from neighbouring countries like Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda have been entering the country illegally and in order to protect people`s lives and security, our force will not allow this business to exist,`` he said.

The police have started impounding motorcycles that are not registered and those operating as taxis (boda-boda).

They have appealed to anyone owning them to cooperate with the police to get necessary documentation.

Mssika named Nshamba, Kamachumu, Misenyi and Karagwe as the most notorious areas for illegal ownership of motorcycles.
