We warmly welcome President George Walker Bush and his entourage to our country. His visit is historical. He is the first President of the most powerful country in the world, the United States of America to pay a state visit to Tanzania, one of the least developed countries of the world.

He is also the first American leader to have not only taken note of Tanzania`s fight against poverty, but also to have done something about its more pressing needs: funding the fight against the debilitating malaria and HIV/Aids.

The US President and his host, President Jakaya Kikwete, will today sign a 668 million-dollar funding for Tanzania from the Millenium Challenge Account, which will go into a number of crucial sectors for development of the country.

But more importantly for Tanzania, is the recognition by the US leader that he is visiting a poor but very friendly African country, which prides itself for its stability, democratic principles and a deep respect for human equality and dignity.

In Tanzanians, he will find a people who cherish simplicity even as they strive to catch up with the rest of the world.

President Bush has a powerful message of hope for Tanzania and the continent: That the US is partnering with African leaders to empower their people to lift up their nations.

It is a privilege to host a leader who sees the potential of our country and the African continent and is ready to work with us to unlock it for the benefit of our countries.

There are two famous Kiswahili words that President Bush will hear very often during his visit in Tanzania: They are KARIBU SANA; meaning indeed that Tanzanians warmly welcome him.
