The flow of political events this week has confirmed the country`s democratic credentials. In short, politically charged three days, an orderly change of leadership has taken place.
We salute the new Prime Minister, Hon. Mizengo Kayanza Peter Pinda who was sworn in by President Jakaya Kikwete yesterday and wish him success in his new assignment assisted by cabinet colleagues who will be known shortly.
We have also seen a lot of fire in the presentation of the Richmond report and its aftermath reflecting the determination of parliament to assume its proper role of holding the government to account.
For the first time in recent parliament history, the people and their MPs were marching in rhyme, as the MPs took to task the government and all those named in the Richmond saga.
The people followed keenly every step of the presentation and debate and the recommendations of the committee that probed the saga, applauding in unison with the MPs and disapproving where they disagreed.
Our hope is that all elected and appointed government officials have read the mood of the people and will make sure they live upto to their expectations.
For this is what President Jakaya Kikwete, who has distinguished himself, in his commitment to the welfare of the country, has been preaching to government officials and legislators alike, that their primary duty is to serve the people, who have given them the mandate.
Notice has been served to all that the ordinary people will exercise their full democratic rights in demanding greater accountability from their elected representatives and government officials.
They will not easily allow actions that hurt their well-being go unpunished. This is how it should be, if better life is to be achieved in this country.
We owe it to President Kikwete`s mature and calm stewardship that democracy is steadily growing in this country.
