An internationally distinguished Tanzanian academician, Professor Issa Shivji, retired from the University of Dar es Salaam formally yesterday, after attaining the age of sixty.

Shivji, who was a professor of law, has made immense contributions, particularly in the field of labour law.

He has more than 85 publications, six monographs, 30 chapters in various books and 36 chapters in various publications, to his credit.

As part of the retirement ceremony held at the university’s main campus, his latest book, titled Let the people speak: Tanzania down the road to neo-liberalism, was launched by the UN Habitat Executive Director, Professor Anna Tibaijuka.

Prof. Tibaijuka heaped praise on the retiree for his academic and other forms of contributions.

She said during his teaching career at the university, fondly known as the Hill, Prof. Shivji broadened the horizon of his students and readers of his works tremendously.
