Defaulting advertisers face MOAT blackout

The Executive Committee of the Media Owners Association of Tanzania (MOAT) has given advertising agencies until end of this month to settle debt arrears they owe various media houses or risk total blackout.

A statement issued yesterday by MOAT called on the agencies to settle arrears of up to June this year before October 1.

``Advertising agencies which fail to meet the deadline will not get advertising services in newspapers, radio and television stations with effect from October 1, 2008,`` the statement read in part.

The statement added that the deterrent measure would still be enforced even when partial payment of debts which go back to the cut off date was made.

``MOAT members realise that the measure might cause some inconveniences to big media advertisers but have been forced to resort to it to save their business which is on the verge of being ruined by non-paying advertising agencies,`` said the statement.

The decision follows a meeting by MOAT’s executive committee which was held in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday to deliberate on the problem of huge outstanding debts.

MOAT said in the statement that the malpractice was crippling financial operations of the media houses concerned.
