The government has said that construction of a fourth lane on the Ali Hassan Mwinyi - Morocco - Mwenge road stretch in Dar es Salaam, which is to go concurrently with the expansion of the Morocco-Old Bagamoyo road, is to start soon.
TANROADS road safety engineer George Dafa said this yesterday in an interview shortly after the end of a course for trainers on safe bicycle driving in Dar es Salaam.
The three-day training programme was organized by the city-based cyclists association (UWABA).
Dafa said the government had earlier intended to expand the Morocco-Mwenge road stretch to four lanes but managed to add one extra lane instead of two due to lack of funds.
He was responding to a question as to why the government had constructed a single lane instead of the proposed two. Expansion of the said road stretch had earlier been designed to accommodate four lanes.
Without mentioning the cost involved and the take-off date, Dafa said it was lucky that the project dovetailed with Morocco-Bagamoyo road expansion project.
``The fourth lane road expansion project came at the right time when the government, through Tanroads, is trying to solicit funds for completion of the remaining part. The project will also include construction of raised zebra crossings to facilitate safe crossing by pedestrians,`` he said.
Uwaba secretary Elaine Baker said the training endeavored to empower its members with skills on safe bicycle driving.
``The training will help members to disseminate knowledge to the community. Among courses in the programme were road safety regulations and respect for other road users,`` she said, adding that members were also taught to ensure they put on bright and reflective clothing to enable motorists see them clearly and thus reduce accidents.
Speaking earlier, Dominata Rwechungura from Uwaba said her organization, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, would organize a special programme on safe bicycle riding in all primary schools in the country.
She said the programme would provide schoolchildren with skills on safe bicycle riding which, she hoped, would relieve schoolchildren from transport problems.
``We want to encourage schoolchildren and other youth groups to love cycling.
