Migiro stresses importance of democracy in ensuring world development

The UN deputy Secretary-General, Dr Asha-rose Migiro, rooted on Tuesday the importance of democracy in maintaining peace, security and development in the world.
Dr Migiro, who is UN second-in-command made the observation when she addressed the National Assembly, as part of her working leave to the country she started a couple of days ago.
``Democracy should be taken as a very important element in ensuring peace and security, and maintaining the same in Africa, and all over the world,`` she said, amid applause from law-makers, currently attending a long budget session here.
Dr Migiro lauded Tanzania `s efforts in improving democratic environment, and she particularly highlighted the country`s active involvement on the same through the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).
She stressed over the need to empower legislators in the area of democracy, expressing deep appreciation on efforts being made to empower them through their various permanent committees.
On human rights, Dr Migiro said Tanzania ``is a shining example on human rights,`` and was exemplary to its neighbours and other nations around the world in keeping peace for its people and other parts of the world.
Migiro, the first woman second-in-command and first African to hold the position, reminded the MPs that the UN role has changed over the years from mainly maintaining peace and security to addressing the pressing issues of today, like poverty and diseases.
She said the cross-cutting issues facing the world today required collective efforts to address and world leaders along with their peoples around the world should stand firm in tackling them jointly.
Dr Migiro, apart from addressing Parliament, had official talks with the top Parliament leadership and attended a special dinner hosted by the Prime Minister, Mizengo Pinda on Tuesday evening in Dodoma .
