By Lydia Shekighenda, Lushoto

Tanzanians have been urged to change their mindset that social services are provided for free, and instead they should engage themselves in productive social and economic activities.

Speaking at the inauguration of Soni market in Lushoto District on Thursday, President Jakaya Kikwete said the concept was outdated, adding that it had caused delays in the efforts towards development.

``If people continue to stick to this concept development will never be achieved,`` he said.

``People should stop waiting for the government to do everything for them; instead they should engage themselves in productive activities,`` he added.

Kikwete, however, underscored the importance of selling food items in hygienic environment, saying a place for selling foodstuff should be clean because a clean environment added value to the commodity.
