Daniel Sima (22), a resident of Monduli District, Arusha Region, has died after falling from the first storey of a building while trying to escape from the police who were attempting to apprehend him and his four colleagues on suspicion of attempted robbery.

According to the Arusha Regional Police Commander, Matei Basilio, the five men had stormed the offices of Sino Hydro Co-operation Ltd with the intention of committing a robbery.

The firm is engaged in the construction of water projects in the district.

Basilio said the incident occurred on Thursday at 8pm in Monduli where the police and the firm\'s guards managed to foil the attempt by laying a trap on the suspects following tips from good Samaritans on the impending robbery.

``We had reports of the impending robbery and we laid a trap by surrounding the premises of the firm,`` he said adding that when the suspects appeared while armed with an array of weapons they mounted the main building up to the first floor where the police confronted them and started chasing them in order to apprehend them.

As the suspects started running in disarray, the deceased tripped off the edge of the floor and fell over to the ground, dying immediately after hitting his head on the ground.

``However, we managed to arrest the other four with the additional help of the public in the area,`` he said mentioning the names of those arrested as Aman Hussein (24), Athuman Rajab (23), and Thompson Shija (27), all residents of Monduli, and Msafiri Shaban (22), a resident of Monduli Sabasaba.

``We are now interrogating the suspects before we take them to court soon,`` said the regional police boss who added that the body of Sima is preserved at Mount Meru Hospital.
