A military helicopter crashed in a village near here yesterday, killing all six people on board. It was heading to Dodoma from here and crashed at 12.40 pm near a secondary school at Maateves village, about 10 kilometres from Arusha airport.
Eyewitnesses said they heard a deafening bang before the chopper went down and caught fire.

Those on board were five adults and a young girl and all were burnt beyond recognition. Details on their identities remain scant.

The Tanzania People`s Defence Forces chopper disintegrated on impact, with the wreckage scattered all over the scene of accident.

An Army statement issued late in the evening said those killed were the chopper`s two pilots and two technicians as well as two passengers.

It added that the chopper was one of two deployed here to help oversee security during the just-ended five-day Leon H. Sullivan Summit, adding that investigations into the circumstances of the accident were going on.
