A total of 173,446,000/- has been set aside by the government for conservation of natural forests in ten villages in Kisarawe District, Coast Region, it has been learnt.
An Accountant with the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) in the district, Mohamed Hamisi, told PST over the weekend that the projects have been initiated by the villagers themselves, including elders.
Hamisi said the ten villages are Homboza, Kifuru, Msanga, Kauzeni, Gumba, Marumbo and Chakenge, where the projects were initiated by the villagers.
Other projects are in Mfuru, Vihingo and Bembeza villages.
“The villagers and elders would contribute a total of 90,852,000/- while the government would provide a total of 173,446,000/- through TASAF. The funds were given by donors,” he said.
He said implementation of the projects would take off by June, this year, and each project would cover at least 50 acres to conserve natural vegetation in each village. Later the projects would be owned by the villagers.
The projects would help to refine carbon dioxide and that the villagers would also enjoy harvesting of forest products including firewood, in accordance with by-laws to be passed by the village authorities .
Hamisi said fruit trees would be planted in the project areas which would prove sustainable and would be under the care of the villagers.
