CELTEL workers have donated books, desks and building materials worth 15m/- to Kisauke Primary School at Madale, on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam.

The donation was handed over on Saturday as part of the company’s activities to mark ‘Make a Difference Day’.

About 50 workers, together with their Celtel managing director Michael Foley, participated in the event.

Speaking at the handover, Foley said the day was dedicated by the company to showing its appreciation and supporting communities whose contributions helped the company prosper.

“‘Make a Difference Day’ provides Celtel staff an opportunity to give something back to the community. The volunteering spirit we are creating is a great way for the firm to get involved in the communities in which we live and work. Tanzanian communities are very important to our business because they are part and parcel of Celtel’s successes,” he said.

The workers also did a small painting work of some of the school’s classrooms, read books, played and served lunch to the school’s pupils.

Kinondoni district education officer Dionice Bouy, who graced the event, commended the cellphone service provider for its examplary move of assisting in community development, especially in the education sector.

“The mobile phone company has once again shown its commitment to supporting communities in the environment it serves,” he said..

Under the firm’s community-based project ‘Build Our Nation,’ Celtel has pledged to provide over 500m/- in teaching aids and materials to schools throughout Tanzania by the end of 2008, said Foley.
