The Minister for Home Affairs, Lawrence Masha, has asked senior police officers to fight corrupt elements within the force in order to restore public trust of their institution.
Masha made the remarks in Dar es Salaam on Friday during an inspectorate tour of various activities under the police force.
He said that with community support, the police force could perform their duties well, which is possible if it was clean and trustworthy before the eyes of the society.
``If you rebuild trust in the police force, people will be willing to collaborate with you both in exposing criminals and in sharing other valid information on crime,`` he said.
He said that in many countries, the police career was admired and respected. If the force was corrupt free, he added, people would build respect and trust it wholeheartedly.
Masha directed the police force to develop community policing to curb crime waves in the country; and passengers to report drunk drivers to the police.
He directed traffic police department to conduct awareness campaigns to the people in order to avoid complaints when the directive was in force.
He further directed the police and the prisons to join forces to build houses for the officers.
The minister said that in building own houses, the forces would help reduce shortage of houses in the two divisions.
