12 die and 29 injured in road smash

Twelve people perished and 29 others were injured yesterday in a road accident when a bus they were travelling in collided with a lorry at Kiejea Village in Kilosa, Morogoro.
Morogoro Regional Police Commander Thobias Andengenye told reporters here that the accident took place at 9.45. It involved Alhooshom Bus, which was travelling from Morogoro to Dodoma and a Scania lorry moving from Dodoma to Dar es Salaam.
Andengenye said the bus hit the trailer of the lorry which had disengaged from the main truck and was running across the road uncontrolled.
He said among those who died were eight men, including the driver and conductor of the bus, and four women. They all died on the spot.
He said 20 passengers were admitted to Berega Hospital. Those in critical condition were rushed to the regional hospital in Morogoro.
One of the victims, Malingumu Leguna (20), said the lorry was trying to overtake another vehicle and the bus was speeding when the accident occurred.
Andengenye said the driver of the lorry had disappeared, but the police had launched a manhunt.
