The European Union launched a 555 million euro ($859.6 million) aid package for Tanzania yesterday aimed at boosting trade, transport and farming.
It also called for more action by the government to combat corruption, which President Jakaya Kikwete has repeatedly listed among his top priorities since taking office three years ago.
``There can be no taboo subjects,`` Tim Clarke, head of EU office in Tanzania, said at the launch in Dar es Salaam.
``We must seek a proactive approach, a sense of urgency and commitment, a desire to root out the causes of corruption and instill good governance principles at all levels of government.``
Tanzania with 40 million people is one of the continent`s biggest recipients of aid, with 42 percent of its 2007/08 spending funded by donors.
Finance Minister Mustafa Mkulo said that about 80 percent of the promised EU funds would support Tanzania`s budget directly, while the rest would go to various development projects.
