The Tanzania Media Women`s Association (Tamwa) has expressed its appreciation of girls` good performance in this year`s Form Six examinations released by the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (Necta) on Monday.

In a press statement issued yesterday, the association said the results had once again proved that girls in this country were indeed committed to achieving their ambitions through hard work.

The results, which were announced by Necta executive secretary Dr Joyce Ndalichako, placed girls` performance at 90.8 per cent against 88.9 per cent for their male counterparts.

``This is indeed exemplary performance by our girls,`` said Tamwa in the one-page statement.

The association commended the girls and urged those who excelled to work even harder at university level so as to join the ranks of elite women and participate fully in decision-making and other leadership positions in our country.

According to Tamwa, their success would help the country in its efforts of empowering women and in its fight against poverty as enshrined in the Millennium Development Goals.

``Although the results are encouraging, stakeholders in the education sector, advocacy groups and the general public should not tire in their efforts of encouraging girls to take their studies seriously and compete with boys on equal ground,`` it said.

It also urged the government to adequately equip girls\' schools in the country to encourage them to attend to their studies through the construction of boarding facilities and an improved learning environment.

Tamwa blamed the 1971 Marriage Act, which allows early marriages, for denying girls a chance to education and suggested stiffer penalties for people who collude with parents and guardians to marry off their girls in an effort to get rich fast.
