Taifa Cup soccer championship kicks off at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam today. The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) Secretary-General, Frederick Mwakalebela, said yesterday that there would be a short ceremony before Iringa play Manyara in the opening match.

``We hope that this year`s event will be staged professionally as we have formed a special technical committee to select potential players,`` he said.

``We want to use this championship to curb young talented players who will be trained to national team players,`` he added.

He said only 11 regions had so far submitted all necessary documents to TFF.

They are Arusha, Mwanza, Tanga, Rukwa, Mtwara, Pwani, Ruvuma, Iringa, Kigoma, Kinondoni and Singida. He said 12 regions were yet to finalise with the national soccer body.

Mwakalebela named commissioners who would handle the 23-team tourney as Amni Sentimea and James Kibenda both of Dar es Salaam, Abdallah Mtore, Edward Issa and Bakari Fungo (Morogoro).

The winners of the tournament to be aired by ITV will pocket 30m/- while the first and second runners-up will be awarded 15m/- and 7.5m/- respectively.

The event is sponsored by Tanzania Breweries Limited through Safari Lager Beer.
