The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) has resolved to honour its fallen academics, Prof Zacharia Mochiwa and Mzee Hamisi Akida by establishing a Kiswahili degree course in rememberance of what they stood for during their lives.

This was said yesterday by the OUT Vice Chancellor, Prof Tolly Mbwette during a historical gathering of professors and other academics from different universities and other institutions at a special remembrance gathering at Mnazi Mmoja`s Anatouglo Hall in Dar es Salaam.

Prof Mbwette said the befallen fellows distinguished themselves by their examplary performance in lecturing, writing, translation and radio programmes, poems and spoken Kiswahili with the late Akida, for instance, being instrumental in securing Arnatouglo Hall for community-based functions.

He said during his lifetime, the late Prof Mochiwa, beamed with many positive qualities ranging from politeness, distinguished mastery of Kiswahili lecturing and writings in addition to various action-oriented development of the language as chairperson of the Tanzania Kiswahili Council (Bakita).

Prof Mbwette said establishment of the Kiswahili degree course at OUT would not only cherish the present and coming generations of fallen academics, but would also sustain development of Kiswahili as one of the vital national and international languages.

They passed away separately recently with the late Mzee Hamisi Akida at the age of 94. He was born on November 22, 1914 and died on March 12, 2008.

Some of his written works in conjuction with others include Kiswahili Dictionary (TUKU), English Kiswahili Dictionary, Swahili English Pocket Dictionary, Terminology Activitiers in Tanzania, Biological terminalogies and various poems.

As for Mochiwa, among his distinguished performances include a distinguished lecturing career, coordination of Kiswahili studies in universities and defence of the use of the language nationally and in international circles to a point of serving as Bakita chairman.
