By Correspondent Austin Beyadi

The Contractors Registration Board (CRB) has deleted 104 contractors, including two foreign ones for failing to comply with the registration requirements.

The deleted contractors include building, civil, electrical, and mechanical and specialist contractors.

Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the CRB Chairman, Charles Kitwanga, said the contractors were deleted between January and December last year.

He said that the contractors failed to meet the board`s registration requirements, which included having construction equipment, spacious office, funds, protective gears for their workers, experts and relevant work experience.

He said most of the deleted contractors were not able to deliver the expected results and efforts to develop them proved futile.

Kitwanga said that the board would not hesitate to delete contractors who failed to demonstrate the required competency and capability in executing construction works or to meet their statutory obligations such as conduct requirements.

He further said that recently, the board experienced increased violations of the law governing the contractors who abuse business names.

Kitwanga said that the abuse of business names among others included a situation whereby a duly registered contractor colluded with developers and allowed its name to be displayed on the sign board erected at the site indicating that it was the one carrying out the works at the site.

He said that the motive behind the unethical arrangements was to illegally allow developers or clients to carry out works on their own using local builders who were not registered as contractors.

Kitwanga said that it was highly undesirable for unregistered builders and laymen to carry out construction works as it lacked necessary technical know how, skills, experience, appropriate equipments and plants thus putting the quality of the construction work in dispute.
