By Michael Haonga

About 98 per cent of businesses in Tanzania operate extra-legally, the Property and Business Formalisation Programme (PBFP), commonly known as MKURABITA, has revealed.

The revelation is contained in poverty reduction strategy research findings presented recently at a three-day meeting in Dar es Salaam and attended by stakeholders on poverty reduction.

The research further reveals that 89 per cent of real property in the country is also held extra-legally.

Speaking to this paper at the meeting, MKURABITA consultant Dr Elifuraha Mtalo said it was not quite correct to lump Tanzania among the poorest countries in the world.

The findings are based on a study commissioned by MKURABITA to establish why the government strategy to reduce poverty among the general population has not delivered the intended results after several years in operation.

During their meeting, the stakeholders, drawn from a cross-section of government officials, NGOs and CBOs from both Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar, dwelt on various aspects of the research findings scheduled to be presented to the government next month.

Among issues discussed included laws and business formalisation, recommendations on proposed changes, set-ups and and labour plan.

The programme focuses on poverty reduction and aims at utilising the country`s abundant resources.
