Two former senior employees of the Tanzania and Zambia Railways Authority (Tazara) were over the weekend evicted from company houses in Dar es Salaam after they had defied a 30-day notice to vacate.

The ex-staff are Dr. Said Wajad of Tazara dispensary who was staying in house number 43B.RHB 0008/2B and Elias Ole Madukenya, former Tazara Head of Operations, who was staying in house number 83A along Nyerere road in the city.

Tazara Legal Counsel Damas Ndumbaro said the eviction exercise was carried out last Friday under the supervision of Senior Legal Counsel Peter Mapunda.

He said in November, last year, Dr Wajad tendered a 24-hour resignation notice after he had secured employment with the Mkapa Foundation, which sponsors HIV/Aids projects in various parts of the country.

Ndumbaro added that the foundation posted Dr Wajad to Namtumbo, Songea District, in Ruvuma Region, subsequent to which in December, last year, Tazara issued him with a 30-day notice to vacate the house.

Despite receiving the notice, Dr Wajad defaulted, hence the eviction.

According to the Tazara legal official, Madukenya retired from Tazara in 2003 and during his retirement he got into conflict with his wife and left for Mang`ula, in Kilombero District in Morogoro Region. while leaving his wife in the house.

Ndumbaro explained that last September, Tazara issued him with a notice to vacate the house within 30 days, upon which Madukenya gave Tazara the green light to proceed with the eviction.

He further said that last December, Tazara served the wife with a 30-day-notice to leave the house, but she refused on the grounds that she would do so only if she were directed by her husband.

This is the third eviction exercise conducted by Tazara against its former employees.

In December, last year, two other ex-staff were evicted from company houses.

They were former Tazara Director of Finance and Supplies Oswald Silwamba and then assistant in charge of Tazara police station Senior Superintendent of Police Leah Mlagani.
