At long last, Lieutenant General Alexander Nyirenda, who had been admitted to the Muhimbili National Hospital, has left for India for specialized treatment.

He is suffering from heart and throat complications.
Nyirenda`s family came out in public last month asking for USD 10, 000 from Good Samaritans to help the Uhuru Torch hero go to India for further medical treatment.

Nyirenda placed the Uhuru Torch on Mt. Kilimanjaro peak on Independence Day on December 9, 1961.

He was first admitted to the Tanzania Heart Institute before being transferred to Muhimbili National Hospital.

Nyirenda`s daughter Tima Kuwani said her father was due to fly to India yesterday at 4pm.

Tima said all travelling arrangements had been completed, and she would be accompanying him together with a doctor.

``Doctor Clay of Muhimbili is coming with us to India. She will be representing the government.

I represent our family since it is not possible for all of us to accompany the old man,`` she said.
Tima said Nyirenda would be treated at Madras Mission Hospital.

She thanked the government for the support it extended to her ailing father. Nyirenda’s medical bill will be footed by the government.
