The First Lady, Mama Salma Kikwete, has said conflicts in many countries in the world were caused by lack of good governance and rule of law that subsequently led to misuse of public resources.

Mama Kikwete made the remarks during the just-ended International Leadership Conference and World Summit on Peace 2008, held in the South Korean capital, Seoul.

The conference was organised by the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) under the leadership of Dr and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon.

Many countries, Mama Kikwete said, were afflicted by political, tribal and religious conflicts simply because some leaders were serving their own individual interests and had no love or care for the majority of the poor they led.

``Good governance reflects making and implementing decisions.

Leaders are charged with the responsibility of making and implementing decisions but proper fulfillment of decisions taken, transparency and people`s participation in decision-making have to be observed,`` she said, adding that setting in place policies that adhere to public needs was also vital.

She said the World Summit on Peace was an appropriate occasion, for it reminded the world on the need to love, value and care for other human beings.

Mama Kikwete called on the leaders throughout the world to appreciate that good governance was an instrument for conflict resolution.

``It is the leaders` duty to eradicate corruption, to involve everyone`s participation in decision-making and to ensure that the minority and underprivileged voices are heard,`` she insisted.

The First Lady attended the conference at the invitation of the Universal Peace Federation, a global alliance of individuals and organisations dedicated to building a world of peace in which everyone can live in freedom, harmony, cooperation and prosperity for all.
