JK trims cabinet size

President Jakaya Kikwete yesterday announced a new cabinet, saying he had merged some ministries so as to reduce size of the government.

He appointed 26 cabinet ministers from the previous 29 and 21 deputies from the previous 31, making a total of 47 ministers from the previous 61.

Nine ministers were left out of the list. These are Joseph Mungai, Basil Mramba, Harith Bakari Mwapachu, Zakhia Meghji, Juma Ngasongwa, Anthony Diallo and Kingunge Ngombale Mwiru, Nazir Karamagi and Ibrahim Msabaha. The last two resigned last week.

According to the President, veteran politicians who had served as ministers starting with the post-independence government up to the present were left out.

He said they had sent him a special request through Kingunge Ngombale Mwiru and Joseph Mungai that they wanted to retire.

``The new cabinet consists of youths, middle aged people and elders. I thank the elderly ministers for their immense contribution to our nation. I am grateful for their readiness to continue serving the nation in a consultative capacity,`` said President Kikwete.

At least six deputy ministers have been elevated to full ministerial positions. These are Dr. Deodurus Kamala, William Ngeleja, Shamsa Mwangunga, Laurence Masha, Mustafa Nkulo and Mathias Chikawe

Some 19 ministers retained their positions although some were shifted to other ministries. Theses include Andrew Chenge, Prof. David Mwakyusa, Seif Khatib, Prof. Juma Kapuya, Mary Nagu, John Magufuli, Prof. Mark Mwandosya, Dr. Hussein Mwinyi, John Chiligati and Philip Marmo.

Others are Margaret Sitta, Prof. Peter Msola, Stephen Wassira, Prof. Jumanne Maghembe, Shukuru Kawambwa, Hawa Ghasia, Sophia Simba, Dr. Batilda Buriani and Bernard Membe
Six new faces include George Mkuchika (full minister), Ezekiel Maige (deputy), Dr. James Wanyancha (deputy), Lucy Nkya (deputy), Ambassador Khamisi Kagasheki (deputy) and Adam Malima (deputy).

The full cabinet is as follows; in President`s Office (Good Governance) the minister of state is Sophia Simba and Hawa Ghasia (Public Service -Management).

In the Vice President`s office, Mohamed Khatib (Union Affairs) and Dr. Batilda Buriani (Environment)
In the Prime Minister’s Office Philip Marmo (Policy, Coordination and Parliament), Stephen Wassira (Regional Administration and Local Government) and the deputy minister, Celina Kombani.

The new minister for Finance is Mustapha Mkulo and his two deputies are Jeremiah Sumari and Omar Yusuf Mzee.

The Minister for Health and Social Affairs remains Prof. David Mwakyusa, assisted by deputy minister Aisha Kigoda.
