By Nasser Kigwangallah

Iran has commended Tanzania for the role it plays in bringing peace and stability to the Great Lakes region, and for its active participation in African Union affairs.

The remarks were made in Dar es Salaam on Monday night by Abbas Vaezi, the ambassador of Iran to Tanzania on the ocassion of the 29th anniversary to mark the victory of the Islamic Revolution which toppled Shah Pahlavi's regime in 1979.

He said Iran would continue supporting Tanzania in development programmes including agriculture, economic and scientific cooperation that aim at alleviating poverty.

``Agreements for cooperation in fostering good and brotherly relations towards that end have been signed between the two countries,`` Vaezi said.

He hoped that more fields of cooperation would be explored after signing of the Joint Commission between the two countries.

Vaezi noted that his country would continue playing a constructive role in the international relations by attaching high importance to fostering good relations
with its neighbours.

He said the relaxation of tension through meaningful dialogue and cooperation has opened up a new chapter in the foreign policy of Iran.

The policy, according to him, follows implementation of a five-year development plan, making Iran one of the developed countries which enjoys high status in economic, scientific and technical field.

``So far, Iran has been able to launch its first home made research rocket built by Iranian experts into the orbit,`` he said.
