Cabinet dissolution derails Nyirenda`s treatment...

A dramatic political earthquake that resulted into the dissolution of the cabinet last week has disrupted plans to send the Uhuru Torch hero, Lt. General Alexander Nyirenda (72), abroad for further treatment, The Guardian has learnt.

Sources revealed yesterday in Dar es Salaam that plans to fly Lt. General Nyirenda to India to undergo further treatment were yet to be effected due to ``a number of developments, including the pending appointment of a new cabinet.``

The Uhuru Torch hero is suffering from a throat-related illness.

Doctors at Muhimbili National Hospital, where Nyirenda is admitted, had recommended a fortnight ago that the Uhuru torch hero be flown to India for specialized treatment.

A source said the recommendations had been stuck at ministry level and the trip would definitely wait until a new cabinet had been formed and the relevant minister facilitated the arrangement.

The immediate former minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof David Mwakyusa, said the Uhuru Torch hero who on Independence Day—December 9, 1961, mounted the torch on Mt Kilimanjaro peak, would be treated within or outside the country at government cost.

Speaking by telephone yesterday, Nyirenda`s doctor, who identified himself as M.D. Mchembe, said he had made his recommendations for the referral since last week, but was not in a picture on what had transpired up to now.

A follow up at Muhimbili National Hospital revealed that the patient was still at his bedside waiting for the next step.

He is feeding by tube on fluid nutrients as he cannot swallow anything.

He first underwent two different medical tests at the Tanzania Heart Institute in Dar es Salaam, before being transferred to the MNH a fortnight ago.
