The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) has donated a truck worth US$ 80,000 to back up conservation in western Serengeti National Park.
The USAID country director, Dr Pam White, handed over the truck to the wildlife officers yesterday at a brief ceremony at the AWF offices in Arusha.
Dr White said the truck would benefit the two game reserves in Ikorongo and Grumeti in western Serengeti, which covers a total area of 993.4 square kilometres.
American people resolved to provide the truck to help in the management of the game reserves to improve infrastructure in Ikorongo and Grumeti Games Reserves, Dr White said.
Receiving the truck on behalf of the wildlife division, the Northern Zone Anti-Poaching Commander, Fredrick Mombeki, expressed gratitude at USAIDs support to wildlife conservation in the country.
USAID has funded the construction of offices for Ikorongo/Grumenti game reserves, provided camping equipment and many others services, Mwombeki said.
He added: The agency supported the development of a management plan for Grumeti/Ikorongo game reserves, supplied computer, printers, camera and communication gear.
The Ikorongo/Grumeti Game Reserves manager, Benjamen Kijika, said the truck would be of great importance in improving transport.
The US state Department provided funds for the development of the Grumeti and Ikorongo game reserves and protect the Serengeti ecosystem.
