Gangsters doped guards before breaking into strongroom, court told

A Dar es Salaam Court yesterday heard that an unspecified sum of money, the property of Security Group of Tanzania Limited, was stolen by a gang of bandits dressed in attires of the security group guard personnel after doping the guards on duty.
The Court was further told that one of the companys guards who was then armed with a shotgun guarding an inside compound, was overpowered by the violent gang upon entry into the compund, wrenching a shotgun from the latter.
That was part of the testimony by PW1, Inspector Madaraka in Kisutu Resident Magistrates Court in support of the prosecution case in which 2bn/- is alleged to have been stolen from the strong room of the company in question.
Madaraka, who is a police detective at Oysterbay police station, was delivering testimony before Senior Resident Magistrate Sivangirwa Mwangesi in a criminal case in which ten accused persons have been arraigned.
Led by the prosecution side under SSP Charles Kenyella, the witness said they were directed by their boss to proceed to the premises of the Security Group Tanzania Limited following a a robbery incident that occurred.
He said he was in the company of the District Investigation Officer Christopher Bageni.
However, he said, on reaching the office premises of the said company they found the bandits had already left.
He said while at the scene of the incident they were told by some workers of the Company that the bandits used a vehicle belonging to the same Company to transact their mission.
Inspector Madaraka said they were further told that the bandits were dressed in uniforms like those worn by the security guard personnel of the same company.
He further told the court that on the material day the bandits had allegedly doped some of the Company guards with some drugs.
He said they found the guards unconscious in an ambulance at the Company premises.
He said among them were the two workers who were assigned with the duty of operating the strong room, namely Soba Kalea, who is the second accused and Mwarami Mohammed, the 6th accused.
Inspector Madaraka further said investigations revealed that the Companys main gate was on the material day locked by locks not belonging to the company.
However, he said on entry into the inside compound they found one of the guards, Yohola Mpembela locked from the inside.
