A Foundation stone has been laid at Mwanambaya village in Mkuranga as the district council has embarked on construction of a soccer stadium.
 
The construction works of the stadium in progress has so far hit an estimated 34.5m/-.
News of the stadium construction was broken during the Freedom Torch visit as race leader Ernest Mwanossa laid the foundation stone over the weekend.

Mwanossa hailed villagers around the area for the initiative that would boost sports promotion.

“I am impressed by your efforts and I congratulate all the leaders and the villagers for solidarity to undertake this task,” he said.

The stadium construction committee chairman, Aboubakar Saga, said the  stadium project took off on June 2 last year as villagers had contributed 31.9m/- to the construction pool.
The district council contributed about 2m/- while former Prime Minister Salim Ahmed Salim chipped in 600,000/- to the construction fund pool.

However, Saga said more contributions are needed to facilitate the project as cost is escalating.

He said the total cost of the stadium would shoot above 200m/- to meet completion stage.

So far the top priority job is to raise a brick wall before other stages that include toilets, platforms, resting and dressing rooms.
