Taifa Stars new coach Kim Poulsen has been beaming with wide smile after his boys posted the first victory in the 2014 World Cup qualifier over Gambia at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam this past Sunday
It was the maiden win since he took over from namesake Jan whose two year reign as a coach produced a mediocre performance save for the Challenge Cup triumph in 2010.
Stars are now second in their group led by Cote d’Ivoire who have amassed four points after a win over Stars and draw to Morocco last Sunday.
With two goals and three points at their credit, Stars have edged both Gambia and Morocco in the group standings after two appearances.
Stars played impressively, especially during the second half when they scored twice after trailing for a complete hour on the field.
Their next match in the qualifiers is against Morocco, a team that scooped six points after winning both legs during the African Nations Cup qualifiers running to the just ended championships staged in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
Poulsen said he is building a side which is showing a lot of promises and have confidence in the team, noting that players are responding well to his instructions.
He said all his players were very outstanding and they exhibited high levels of discipline to play impressive football.
“I’m happy with the performance by my players. We are doing very well. Even after conceding the early goal players never gave up hope and they fought for to win,” he said.
Poulsen now focuses on the African Nations Cup qualifier tie against Mozambique.
