Two days after Minister for Works Dr John Magufuli ordered the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) to remove all electricity poles from road reserve areas to pave way for building the infrastructure to be used by the Rapid Bus Transit project, Tanzania Roads Agency (Tanroads) has now agreed to shoulder the responsibility.

Tanroads in Dar es Salaam region has agreed to shoulder the responsibility after Tanesco, through its Public Relations Manager Badra Masoud, on Thursday said the power utility company was not ready to implement Dr Magufuli’s order on the ground that such task was supposed to be carried out by Tanroads.

Dr Magufuli was compelled to issue the order on Wednesday after it came to his attention that implementation of Dar Es Salaam Rapid Transit (DART) project was being slowed down by the presence of electricity poles and water pipes in road reserve areas.

Masoud said the contractor awarded the tender to construct the DART infrastructure- Stra Bag- should do the job at Tanroads’ cost, adding that Tanesco would only be ready to provide technical support.

Speaking yesterday to The Guardian, Tanroads manager for Dar es Salaam zone Julius Ndyamkana said  they would remove the polls as well as water and sewage pipes which are within the road reserved areas with the help of the German constructing company, Stra Bag.
