The national athletics championship that was due to take place from July 20- 23 has been postponed as the Tanzania People’s Defense

Force (TPDF) team has been chosen to represent the country in the African athletics championship to be hosted in Benin.

The championship now will be staged from August 31 to September 2 at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The African championship will commence on June 26 to July 2 featuring various national teams from all over the continent.

The Athletics Tanzania (AT) vice president, William Kalaghe, has said that the TPDF team has been selected to represent Tanzania because they were already in camp preparing for the local championship.

Kalaghe indicated that the team has done enough preparations as athletes have been together in training camp for a long time so they got the nod to represent the country in Benin.

According to Kalaghe, the TPDF team was already in camp in Mbulu, Manyara region, and has progressed well in training under their coach Shaaban Nyiti.

“This decision is due to the good camp that has already lasted for a long time and the immediate outcome of the tournament ahead,” said the vice president.

The team will depart for Benin on June 24 with 15 athletes and some officials from AT and TPDF.

The AT officials will attend the CAA annual general meeting as well as to introduce the newly elected leaders to the athletics world body.
