Unheralded boxer Said Zungu has defeated Adam Ngage by 77-74 points to win the national championship berth in a light welter eight-round bout held over the weekend in Pugu.
The long waited bout, promoted by Lucas Rutta, had boiled since last year when Zungu’s brother Mussa was squarely beaten by Ngage.
The perfect revenge aimed to restore family pride worked in the right direction for Zungu who was performing on behalf of his brother.
However, resilient Zungu, who kissed the floor during the fifth round of the bout, went on to dictate terms in the subsequent rounds.
Ngage was stunned by Zungu’s seventh round knock out attempt when he kissed the canvas but he steadily regained composure to avoid the humiliation.
Too little too late the judge were already impressed by Zungu who won by three-point margin.
Fans who rallied behind the boxing duo had been satisfied with the outcome of the bout.
A surprise contender for Zungu in subsequent bouts might come from his rivals.
The grand bout was preceded by several under card four-round battles as boxer Haidar Kondo defeated Filbert John by 39-37 points.
In bantam weight Shadrack Juma posted a 40-36 point’s win against Aziz Saleh.
Deo Samwel won by technical knock out in the third round of a feather weight match against Idi Rashid.
Zungu and his unknown opponent will battle for the vacant national light welter title at a date to be announced later.
The Tanzania Professional Boxers Association (TPBO) general secretary, Ibrahim Kamwe, hailed the boxers’ performance. He said TPBO intends to make the next bout highly exciting.
“We hope Zungu’s opponent for the title will be known soon,” he said.
