Kagame Cup defending champions Yanga have declared that they will retain the title of the tournament set to kick off on July 14.

Fred Felix Minziro, the team’s assistant coach said yesterday that nothing will stop the side from retaining the regional title as Yanga had done good recruitment ahead of the tournament.

“We have signed good players and if the current peace will continue to prevail at the club, then nothing will stop us from lifting the trophy again,” the assistant coach said.

He said Yanga did not perform well in the last season’s Mainland Premier League because of leadership wrangles which cropped up, but it was good that Kagame Cup comes when the team was in a good shape.

Minziro who says that he is ready to work with any coach the club will recruit, said players and officials were in upbeat mood ahead of the championship organised by the Council of Central and East Africa Football Associations (Cecafa).

Yanga recently dropped their coach Kostadian Papic after the team started putting up inconsistent results in the 14-team league.

The thunderous defeat at the end of the league in a 5-0 by traditional rivals Simba SC led to removal of chairman Lloyd Nchunga.

Other teams which will represent Tanzania Mainland are Simba and Azam FC.

Full fixtures of the tournament will be out on June 29.
