Inedaquate funding happens to be a stumbling lock to Tanzanian swimmers who are intending g to compete at the continental’s zone three and four championship to be staged in Mozambique next month.
Only 14 swimmers are currently attending training sessions at the International School of Tanganyika (IST) Upanga campus according to the Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) technical director Marcelino Ngalioma.
Ngalioma said TSA called 25 swimmers from Dar es Salaam to join the camp but only 14 are self sponsoring and has been reporting for the camp for the past two weeks.
The TSA director said beside the 25 Dar es Salaam swimmers, his association named four upcountry and other 4 foreign based ones, whom he said the technical department of TSA sends those training manuals.
He said the team needs more than 30m/- to prepare and compete at the Mozambique games which are expected to start early next month.
He said all the swimmers who have not reported for camp have communicated to TSA that they do not have money for transport, food and other needs while camping.
Ngalioma attributed the development to lack of sponsor. The camp is supposed to end on April 21 ahead of the team’s departure, a day later.
However, Ngalioma said TSA has made bookings, but due to lack of fund at his association TSA is uncertain when the team will leave the country.
Initially, TSA wanted to send twenty swimmers to the games but due to funds hiccup the number of swimmers is likely to be low.
“We have already talked to the Mozambique airliner but we have not given them the exact number and also the date of our departure to Maputo”, he said.
The country swimmers failed to compete at the same championship when Botswana staged the event last year due to lack of funds.
