Over 300 small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) from the Northern Zone, comprising Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Manyara regions, yesterday began to participate in a week-long Small Industries Development Organization (SIDO) exhibition.

A statement released by the Tanga SIDO Regional Office said the exhibitions, estimated to cost 50.2m/- will be held at the Tangamano grounds here.

According to Tanga SIDO Regional Manager, Selemani Mtani, the exhibition will involve entrepreneurial groups on handicraft, masonry, tailoring, soap making and leather products.

He said manufactured products on offer will include maize mill, food processing machinery, sisal decortications, farming ploughs, cutlery, palm extraction machines, shoes and steel products.

The annual exhibitions, also undertaken in other SIDO zones, are expected to be attended by several dignitaries from the four regions, including the Minister for Industries and Trade, Dr Abdalalah Kigoda who will be the chief guest.

SIDO zonal exhibitions were first officially launched in 2002 in Shinyanga, where the occasion was chaired by Selemani Mtani then the region’s SMEs manager.

Ultimately, it spread to Arusha, Tanga, Kilimanjaro and Manyara regions.

According to Mtani, the objective of the exhibition is to enable entrepreneurs to access to markets for products they manufacture, to provide them with entrepreneurial skills and enable them produce products with better quality in order to counter competition with manufacturers of same products, either within or outside the country.

The exhibitions were sponsored by SIDO headquarters, Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) and National Microfinance Bank (NMB).

Official launching of the displays will take place on May 31.
