Patrick Mafisango’s brilliant goal ten minutes to time against Ruvu Shooting at the national Stadium in Dar es Salaam yesterday was enough to keep pace makers Simba at the top of the Mainland premiership.
Mafisango scored the goal after squandering a glorious opportunity barely two minutes earlier in the game. The Simba midfielder stunned spectators when his close range shot sailed over the cross bar with goalkeeper Benjamin Haule well sprawling o the turf, completely beaten.
Simba laboured to win the match which Ruvu Shooting had a number of opportunities wasted for shooting wide.
It was a matter of experience rather than footwork that helped Simba to earn the victory before their home fans who had turned out at the stands to watch their team playing the first match since ousting Algeria’s Entente Setif in the Confederation Cup last weekend.
Shooting’s striker Abdallah Juma was at his best while dissecting Simba defence almost at will but goalkeeper Juma Kaseja worked beyond the call of duty to thwart the attacks.
Simba's performance came into life after introducing Uhuru Suleiman and Edward Christopher in replacement of Gervais Kargo and Salum Machaku later in the second half.
The victory has kept Simba at the top of the premiership standings with 53 points in 23 appearances to open a three point gap over another hot title contender Azam FC.
There is no harm to Ruvu Shooting who are still stuck at the seventh position with 27 points after 23 appearances as well.
With three games in hand to wind up the season, Shooting are out of the title chase even if they win the entire remaining fixture but safe from relegation worries.
