The government has been urged to form an independent commission to investigate recent the chaos which occurred in Zanzibar so as to take legal action against the culprits.

The advice was given by Chakechake Member of Parliament Rajab Mbaruk Mohamed (CUF) during direct questions to Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda in the National Assembly yesterday.

The chaos in the Isles early this month led to destruction of properties and injury to people was masterminded by Zanzibar Islamic Revival Forum demanding seccession of Zanzibar from the Union.

MP Mohamed demanded to know whether the Union government in collaboration with Zanzibar government was ready to form the commission.

The lawmaker said that currently there were languages associated with the chaos and some groups and political parties which were also being linked to the chaos.

He said that Zanzibar under the Union government has been enjoying peace and harmony but there were people, approximately 35 per cent, who were against the Government of National Unity and to date were not satisfied with the arrangement.

The MP also pointed an accusing finger at the media saying that in the recent chaos they only reported churches which were set on fire and left out mosques and other properties which were also burned and people injured.

“While this was happening the media reported many stories especially of the churches which were burnt but forgot that there were also mosques which were set on fire and other properties destroyed,” he said.

He asked Prime Minister to issue a strong statement on the manner some of the media reported the issue.

He cited the case of Kenya saying that among the problems which led to the chaos was the unbalanced manner in which the media reported the issue.

Responding, Pinda said that the government was taking measures to ensure that such chaos is contained.

Concerning forming an independent Commission the Premier said the government will take the matter to the Zanzibar government to decide whether there was a necessity for such action or that the measures it has taken were enough.

“It is good for this problem to be contained because if left unchecked especially as the country goes into process of writing a new constitution it will lead to more chaos,” he said.

Concerning the media reporting of the chaos, the Premier called for a balanced approach, saying biased stories may cause people to believe that a media outlet is associated to a certain group.
