Fifty houses pledged by the government in 2007 to be built in Longido district are to be completed in the 2013/14 fiscal year.

The deputy minister for Lands and Human Settlement Development Goodluck Ole Medeye made the remarks yesterday in Parliament in response to a question by Longido Member of Parliament (CCM) Michael Laizer, who wanted to know when the government would fulfill its promise to builds the houses.

Medeye said the houses were not built due to inadequate funds, but adding that they would now be built by the National Housing Corporation beginning this financial year.

He said it was the strategy of the government to build offices and staff houses in all new districts.

He noted that the speed of construction of the buildings was expected to increase after NHC signing housing loan agreements with eight banks in the country, namely Azania, Bancorp, NMB, NBC, KCB and Exim bank.

Others are Commercial Bank of Africa, Bank of Africa and Stanbic bank.

He said under the agreements the banks will provide long-term loans loans of up to 20 years with minimal interest rates to Tanzanians wishing to build or purchase NHC houses.

“My ministry, through NHC, is meeting with the administration of Longido district to see how to finance the road, electricity and water infrastructure in the construction area.

In another development strategy the minister told Lupa MP (CCM) Victor Mambalaswa that the govenment was communicating with Tanesco and the water authority to ensure that residents in the district got clean water and electricity.

Mwambalaswa had wanted to know when water and electric services would be provided.
