The Police force in Zanzibar yesterday used tear gas to disperse members of the Islamic revival group (UAMSHO) who were heading to Donge constituency where they had a congregation in one of the mosques in a series of their meetings demanding Zanzibar to separate from the Union.

Zanzibar Commissioner of Police, Mussa Ali Mussa said the members were being ferried by vehicles from Zanzibar Urban West region towards North Unguja region when they were stopped by the police and directed to go back.

He said the police force had received a letter from the regional commissioner directing them to stop the group from conducting the congregation in the area, saying ordinary residents were opposed to the group using the mosque for political activities.

"The police force started dispersing them after they arrived at Mahonda area. We therefore ask the residents to shun activities aimed at violating peace and harmony,” he said.

The event comes few days after the Minister of state in the second vice president’s office, Mohamed Aboud banned the congregation, demonstrations, and meetings which have no government permit following the may 26 violence which led to burning of several bars and churches in Zanzibar.
