Dar bids farewell to Editor today

The Tanzania Editors Forum has said the body of Jambo Leo editor Willy Edward who passed away on Saturday in Morogoro Region will be transported on Wednesday to his home village in Serengeti, Mara Region for burial on Saturday.

TEF Chairman Absalom Kibanda said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that after talks with his family members they agreed to bury the deceased body on Saturday. He said last respects will be held today.

He said editors have agreed to contribute 30,000/- each, adding that the money collected will be given to the widow. He however said that other media stakeholders have pledged more than 700,000/-.

He said Serengeti Breweries contributed 1m/- and will print 200 T-shirts and khangas. He added: “We thank them for their continued support and collaboration with journalists.”

Edward who was the Chief Editor with Jambo Leo newspaper passed away on Saturday in Morogoro where he was attending a census seminar organised by the National Bureau of Statistic (NBS).

He collapsed when preparing to return to his hotel after paying a visit to his children who are staying in Morogoro.

Relatives in collaboration with TEF, Morogoro Regional Commissioner’s Office and journalists on Sunday afternoon transported the body of the deceased to Dar es Salaam, where it is preserved at the Muhimbili National Hospital.

A relative said the doctor’s report showed that apart from heart complications, Edward fell and hit the back of his head on the ground leading to his death.
